This runs one way, south to north, and that is the point. You start at Kanyakumari with the sunset on arrival and the sunrise the next morning, then drive north into Kerala and never come back down the same road. Padmanabhapuram Palace is on the way at Thuckalay, 35 km out. Kovalam is 90 km from the Cape and the first night in Kerala. Poovar, 20 minutes south of Kovalam, is where the Neyyar river meets the sea across a sandbar and a boat takes you through mangroves to a beach you cannot reach on foot. Then Alleppey for the houseboat, and a drop at Kochi airport or Ernakulam station on day five.

Total driving is about 460 km over five days, and the longest single stretch is Kovalam to Alleppey at 160 km, roughly four hours on NH66 with a stop at Varkala cliff if you want it. Tamil Nadu and Kerala both charge state permit fees for taxis crossing the border; ours are included, and our drivers carry the paperwork, which matters at the Kaliyikkavila checkpost where a car without it sits for an hour.

The houseboat is the part people ask most about, so plainly: you board at noon, cruise the Vembanad lake and the canals until about 5:30, moor for the night at a spot the boat owner chooses, eat three meals cooked on board, and disembark at 9 am. Boats are priced by number of bedrooms and are not included in our car rate because the range is enormous. We book them for you at cost with operators we have used, or you book your own. Ferry details for the first morning are on our Vivekananda Rock page; the drive up is covered on our Kanyakumari to Trivandrum route.

What this trip includes

  • Sunset and sunrise at Kanyakumari, with the 8 am ferry before leaving
  • Padmanabhapuram Palace on the drive out, not as a detour
  • Kovalam lighthouse beach for the first Kerala night
  • Poovar estuary boat through mangroves to the golden sand bar
  • One night on an Alleppey houseboat, moored on Vembanad lake
  • Drop at Kochi airport or Ernakulam Junction, no return drive

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Kanyakumari, the monuments and sunset

  • Pick-up from Nagercoil Junction or Trivandrum airport
  • Gandhi Mandapam, Kamaraj Memorial and the tsunami memorial
  • Bhagavathy Amman Temple before 5 pm
  • Sunset Point by 6 pm, night in Kanyakumari
If arriving at Trivandrum airport the drive to the Cape is 95 km and about two and a half hours — a morning flight still gives you the full afternoon.
Day 2

Sunrise, the rocks, the palace and into Kerala

  • Sunrise Point at 5:45 am, breakfast at the hotel
  • 8:00 am ferry to both rocks and the glass bridge
  • Padmanabhapuram Palace at Thuckalay, 35 km — closed Mondays
  • Cross into Kerala at Kaliyikkavila, lunch at Neyyattinkara
  • Kovalam by 4 pm, evening on Lighthouse Beach
The Kaliyikkavila border post checks taxi permits. Ours are in the car; it is the reason we do not sub-contract this route.
Day 3

Poovar backwater boat, then the Trivandrum temple and Kovalam

  • Poovar boat jetty by 8:30 am, 20 km south of Kovalam
  • Two-hour boat through the mangrove canals to the estuary sand bar
  • Lunch at a floating restaurant or back in Poovar village
  • Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Trivandrum — outer view only unless in dhoti and saree
  • Kovalam evening, second night
The sand bar at Poovar is reachable only by boat and only when the sea is calm — from June to September the boats often stop at the estuary mouth.
Day 4

North on NH66 to Alleppey and the houseboat

  • 7:30 am departure, 160 km north on NH66
  • Varkala cliff for a coffee and the view, 45 minutes
  • Board the houseboat at Alleppey by noon, lunch on board
  • Cruise Vembanad lake and the canals until about 5:30 pm
  • Moored for the night, dinner on board
Houseboats moor by 5:30 pm under a district rule and do not move again until morning. The evening is quiet, not a cruise.
Day 5

Disembark and drop at Kochi

  • Breakfast on board, disembark at 9 am
  • Alleppey beach and the 1862 pier, 30 minutes
  • Drive 60 km north to Kochi
  • Fort Kochi Chinese nets and the Dutch palace if time allows
  • Drop at Kochi airport or Ernakulam Junction
Kochi airport is 40 km north of the city, allow 90 minutes from Fort Kochi in afternoon traffic.

Included

  • Air-conditioned sedan for five days with four overnight halts
  • Driver, fuel, all tolls, parking and both state permits
  • Driver food and four nights of driver accommodation
  • Pick-up at Nagercoil or Trivandrum airport, drop at Kochi
  • Up to 550 km of running across the five days
  • Houseboat booked at cost through operators we have used
  • Poovar boat arranged at the jetty at the posted rate
  • Route advice on the Monday palace closure and the Poovar sea state

Not included

  • Hotels for three nights and the houseboat night
  • Poovar boat, about ₹2,500 to ₹4,000 per boat
  • Ferry and glass bridge at Kanyakumari, about ₹115 per person
  • Palace entry and camera fee
  • Meals except those served on the houseboat
  • Kilometres beyond 550 km, at ₹12 per km

One direction, two states, no backtracking

Most Kerala and Kanyakumari packages sold from Kochi or Trivandrum do the Cape as a long day trip: 95 km down from Trivandrum, a ferry in the midday queue, and 95 km back in the dark. You lose the sunset, the sunrise and half a day of driving. We run it the other way round and start at the Cape.

Fly into Trivandrum, or take a train to Nagercoil, and spend the first night in Kanyakumari. That gives you the sunset on arrival and the 5:45 am deck the next morning without an alarm at three. The 8 am ferry is quiet. By 10:30 you are on the road north with the whole of Kanyakumari done properly, and the palace at Thuckalay is on the way rather than a detour.

From there it is Kerala all the way: Kovalam, Poovar, the coast road, Alleppey, Kochi. You never see the same road twice, and you end at an airport with direct flights to every major city. The distances are modest — the longest day is 160 km — so this is a slower trip than the mileage suggests. Three of the five days involve under two hours in the car.

Poovar: the stop that surprises people

Poovar is a fishing village 20 km south of Kovalam where the Neyyar river reaches the sea and is stopped by a sandbar. Behind the sandbar is an estuary lined with mangroves and coconut, and a handful of resorts on stilts. Boats leave from a jetty in the village and take you through the mangrove canals — narrow, shaded, full of kingfishers in the morning — out to the estuary and the golden sand bar where you can walk across to the open sea.

It is at its best from November to March when the bar is closed and the estuary is still. In the monsoon the river breaks through the bar, the sea is rough, and the boats stop at the estuary mouth. We tell people this because the photographs online are all dry-season photographs.

Boat rates are posted at the jetty and depend on the boat size and route: about ₹2,500 to ₹4,000 for a boat taking up to six, for around two hours. Motor boats are faster; the country boats are quieter and see more birds. Go at 8:30 am. By 11 the light is flat and the resort boats have churned the canals. The elephant rock and the floating restaurant are optional extras the boatmen will offer; the restaurant is fine, the rock is a rock.

The houseboat night, honestly described

An Alleppey houseboat is a converted rice barge with one to four bedrooms, a crew of two or three, and a kitchen at the back. You board around noon, eat lunch as the boat moves out onto Vembanad lake, cruise the wide water and then the narrower canals past paddy fields and villages, and moor around 5:30 pm because the district does not allow movement after dark. Dinner is cooked on board. In the morning you are back at the jetty by nine.

The good parts are real: the light on the water at five, the fish curry, the silence after the engine stops. The bad parts are also real. In peak season there are a lot of boats and the main canals feel like a traffic lane. Air conditioning in the bedrooms usually runs only from 9 pm to 6 am on a generator. The water in the canals nearest Alleppey town is not clean. Mosquitoes arrive at dusk.

Rates run from about ₹8,000 for a one-bedroom basic boat in low season to ₹30,000 and more for a premium two-bedroom in December. We book at cost with three operators we know and send you the photographs and the exact price before confirming. Or book your own and we simply drop you at the jetty. There is no commission either way.

Costs across five days and how to keep them down

The car is ₹24,500 for a sedan including both state permits, tolls, parking and the driver’s four nights. That works out at under ₹5,000 a day for a private car and driver across 460 km and two states, which compares well against the Kochi-based operators who add a return leg you do not need.

Hotels are your biggest variable. Kanyakumari one night, Kovalam two, then the houseboat. Kovalam runs ₹2,500 to ₹6,000 for a decent mid-range room near Lighthouse Beach; Samudra beach to the north is quieter and slightly cheaper. The houseboat replaces a hotel night and includes three meals, so compare it against a hotel room plus food rather than against a room alone.

Tickets are small: ferry and bridge ₹115, palace about ₹100, Poovar boat split between the group. Meals in Kerala are cheap away from the beach — a fish thali in Neyyattinkara or Alappuzha town is ₹150. For four people in December, plan roughly ₹55,000 to ₹70,000 all in including the car. Five or six people should take the Innova Crysta at ₹36,500 for the luggage alone, since houseboat and beach nights mean bags get opened often. Season notes are in our best time to visit guide.

Best time and who it suits

When: November to February, when both the Kanyakumari ferry and the Poovar estuary boats run every day and the backwaters are neither flooded nor smelling of low water.

Who: Suits couples and families who want the Cape and the backwaters in one trip flying into Trivandrum and out of Kochi; it does not suit anyone who needs to return to Kanyakumari, because the whole plan is one-directional. See our month-by-month guide before you fix dates.

Questions about the Kerala + Kanyakumari

Kovalam is about 90 km from Kanyakumari, roughly two and a half hours via Padmanabhapuram and the Kaliyikkavila border. Alleppey is a further 160 km north of Kovalam on NH66, about four hours. Kochi is 60 km beyond Alleppey. The whole one-way route from the Cape to Kochi is about 460 km including the Poovar detour.
Yes, with a Kerala state permit, which our cars carry for this route. The border checkpost at Kaliyikkavila inspects taxi papers and a car without the permit is held or fined. The permit cost is included in our rate. This is also why we do not sub-contract this itinerary to local drivers who only hold a Tamil Nadu badge.
No, because houseboat prices range from about ₹8,000 to over ₹30,000 a night depending on the boat and the month, and bundling one in would hide that. We book it for you at cost with operators we have used, and send photographs and the exact price before confirming. You are free to book your own and we drop you at the jetty.
Fly into Trivandrum and out of Kochi. Trivandrum is 95 km from Kanyakumari, so a morning arrival still gives you the Cape sunset on day one. Kochi is 60 km from Alleppey and has direct flights to every major Indian city and the Gulf. Flying in and out of the same airport adds a 200 km return leg with nothing new on it.
Poovar is worth the morning from November to March, when the estuary is still and the boat reaches the sand bar. In the monsoon months the sea breaks through the bar and the boats stop short, so we swap it for a longer Kovalam day or a Trivandrum museum visit. Kovalam is fine but it is a beach; Poovar is a place you cannot see any other way.
