Kanyakumari Sunrise and Sunset

Watch sunrise from the beach below the Gandhi Mandapam and sunset from the point past the Tsunami memorial, 800 m west. Sunrise ranges from about 6:00 am in October to 6:35 am in January; sunset ranges from about 5:55 pm in November to 6:40 pm in July. Kanyakumari is one of the few mainland points where both can be seen over open water on the same day.

Kanyakumari Ferry and Tickets

The ferry to Vivekananda Rock runs about 8 am to 4 pm, return ticket around ₹75, from a counter east of the Amman temple. Add the glass bridge ticket, about ₹40, at the same counter. Go right at 8 am or between 1 and 3 pm to avoid the 9-to-11 am queue, and check the noticeboard first in the June-September monsoon, when sailings are sometimes suspended for rough seas.

Kanyakumari with Kids

The ferry, temple and Gandhi Mandapam are manageable for children and elderly parents if timed before 10 am or after 3 pm to avoid heat and queues. Skip Suchindram’s longer walk and the glass bridge for children under five. The nearest reliable hospitals are in Nagercoil, 20 km away. Carry water, a hat and a change of clothes, and expect most walking distances to be under 400 metres at any single site.

Kanyakumari in Monsoon

June to September brings waterfalls at full flow, hotel rates down 35 to 45 percent, and an empty ferry queue, at the cost of cloudy sunrises on most mornings and occasional ferry suspensions for rough seas. Come for the hills and the value, not the sunrise, and budget an extra day if the ferry crossing matters to your plans.
