Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar Statue seen from the Kanyakumari shore in clear post-monsoon light
Kanyakumari district in 5 chapters

The district in pictures, with the month attached

A gallery is only useful if it tells you when the picture was taken. Thirparappu in August and Thirparappu in March are two different places, and a photograph of the falls in full flow above a March itinerary is a small lie that a lot of tour websites tell. So every image here carries the month it was shot where we know it, and where the shot is from a licensed library rather than our own camera we say so. The sunrise pictures are from December and January, when the horizon is clearest; the green hill pictures are from the wet months.

We have grouped them the way we plan trips rather than alphabetically: the town and the two rocks, the temple and heritage circuit, the western hills and water, the coast, and the vehicles you will actually sit in. If a picture makes you want to add a place to your day, check the relevant package or the taxi route for the distance first. Several of the prettiest places here are a long way from the others.

Kanyakumari town and the two rocks

The point, the ferry, the glass bridge and the town behind them. Sunrise shots are December and January; by June the horizon is usually cloud.

Temples and heritage within an hour

Suchindram, the Amman temple, Padmanabhapuram Palace and Vattakottai Fort. Padmanabhapuram is closed on Mondays and the palace interior cannot be photographed.

Western hills, falls and dams

Thirparappu, Mathur aqueduct and the reservoirs. These pictures are from July to September; in the dry months expect a fraction of this water.

The coast either side of the point

Fishing harbours and beaches west towards Kovalam and east towards Thiruchendur. Swimming is unsafe at most of them and we say which.

The vehicles and the roads out

Sedan, Innova Crysta, Tempo Traveller and coach, plus the long roads to Madurai, Rameswaram and the Kerala hills that most multi-day tours take.
