Most honeymoon enquiries ask for two things: privacy and a view. We keep the car exclusively yours for four days and time the two big sights, sunset on the evening you arrive and sunrise the next morning, so neither is shared with a coach party. Day one ends at Sunset Point with twenty unhurried minutes before the evening crowd arrives. Day two starts at 5:45 am on the same stretch of sand, quieter still, ahead of the 8 am ferry to the rocks and the glass bridge crossing between them.

From there the trip turns towards Kerala. Padmanabhapuram Palace, 35 km out at Thuckalay, is the one stop we tell couples to slow down for — the black polished floors and the queen mother’s private prayer hall reward an unhurried hour rather than the rushed twenty minutes a bus tour gets. Kovalam is two and a half hours further, across the Kaliyikkavila border post, and the first evening there is built around the lighthouse beach at dusk. Poovar, twenty minutes south, is the set piece: a boat through mangrove canals to a sandbar with the open sea on the far side, calm on a weekday morning in a way Kovalam beach itself rarely is.

This is not a lazy trip. Four days cover about 260 km, spread out rather than crammed, and the return to Trivandrum airport on the last morning is two and a half hours, so an afternoon flight works without a scramble. Add a night in Kovalam if you want a full lazy beach day; do not shorten the Kanyakumari half, since the sunset-then-sunrise pairing is the part almost nobody regrets booking. Our five-day Kerala and Kanyakumari tour is the longer version if Alleppey is on the list too.

What this trip includes

  • Sunset on arrival evening, sunrise the next morning, both without a ticket queue
  • Same car and driver for all four days, no group schedule to follow
  • Padmanabhapuram Palace at an unhurried pace, not a twenty-minute walk-through
  • Poovar mangrove boat to a sandbar most Kovalam visitors never reach
  • Kerala state taxi permit included, no delay at the Kaliyikkavila border
  • Ends at Trivandrum airport, no need to double back to Kanyakumari

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival at Kanyakumari and the first sunset together

  • Pick-up from Nagercoil Junction, Kanyakumari station or Trivandrum airport
  • Check in, then a slow walk along the seafront to Gandhi Mandapam
  • Bhagavathy Amman Temple before the evening crowd, about 5 pm
  • Sunset Point by 6 pm, no ticket needed, then dinner in town
Ask for a temple-side room, not a highway-side one — the five-minute walk to Sunrise Point tomorrow is worth more than a slightly cheaper rate.
Day 2

Sunrise, the rocks, and the road into Kerala

  • 5:45 am at Sunrise Point, breakfast at the hotel after
  • 8:00 am ferry to Vivekananda Rock and the Thiruvalluvar Statue
  • Glass bridge crossing between the two rocks
  • Padmanabhapuram Palace, Thuckalay — 35 km, closed Mondays
  • Cross into Kerala at Kaliyikkavila, lunch at Neyyattinkara
  • Kovalam by mid-afternoon, evening on Lighthouse Beach
The palace ticket counter stops selling around 4 pm even though it closes at 4:30, so we leave by 1:30 to be safe.
Day 3

Poovar backwater morning, a free afternoon at Kovalam

  • Poovar boat jetty by 8:30 am, twenty minutes south of Kovalam
  • Two-hour boat through the mangrove canals to the estuary sandbar
  • Lunch back in Poovar village or a floating restaurant on the water
  • Free afternoon at Kovalam — Samudra Beach is quieter than Lighthouse Beach
  • Evening at leisure, second night in Kovalam
The sandbar is reachable only when the sea is calm — from June to September the boats often stop at the estuary mouth instead.
Day 4

A slow morning and the drop at Trivandrum

  • Late breakfast, no fixed wake-up time on the last morning
  • Optional stop at the Padmanabhaswamy Temple outer view in Trivandrum
  • Drive to Trivandrum airport, about 45 minutes from Kovalam
  • Drop for an afternoon or evening flight
For a morning flight, skip the Trivandrum stop and go straight to the airport from Kovalam.

Included

  • Air-conditioned sedan, exclusively yours, for four days and three nights
  • Driver, fuel, all tolls, parking and the Kerala state permit
  • Driver food and three nights of driver accommodation
  • Pick-up at Nagercoil, Kanyakumari or Trivandrum airport, drop at Trivandrum
  • Up to 300 km of running across the four days
  • No fixed group timings — the day moves at your pace
  • Poovar boat arranged at the jetty at the posted rate
  • WhatsApp contact with our office through the trip

Not included

  • Hotels for three nights and all meals
  • Ferry and glass bridge tickets, about ₹115 per person
  • Palace entry and camera charges
  • Poovar boat fee, about ₹2,500 to ₹4,000 per boat
  • Kilometres beyond 300 km, at ₹12 per km

Why we run the sunset first and the sunrise second

Sunset and sunrise at Kanyakumari are roughly twelve hours apart, and most operators put the ferry in between them on the same afternoon, which means a couple’s first hours together at the tip are spent standing in a queue rather than watching the sea. We reverse that. Arrival afternoon is for checking in and walking the seafront; sunset is the calm, low-key event, ten minutes from the hotel and free of any ticket.

The next morning is the one people remember. The deck at Sunrise Point at 5:45 is a fraction as full as it will be by 6:15, and from October to March the sun clears the water almost due east, which is the cleanest version of the view. Breakfast, then the 8 am ferry crossing while the sea is still glassy, is the better sequence than an afternoon boat in choppy water. It costs nothing extra to plan the day this way. It simply means telling the driver the order in advance, which we do by default on this package rather than leaving it to chance.

Padmanabhapuram and the border crossing into Kerala

Padmanabhapuram Palace sits almost exactly on the road out of Kanyakumari towards Kerala, so it costs the trip no detour, only time. It is the largest wooden palace in Asia, run by the Kerala government though it sits inside Tamil Nadu, and it is closed on Mondays, which we check against your dates before confirming the itinerary. Shoes come off at the door, the black polished floors are cool underfoot, and the queen mother’s prayer hall and the carved rosewood ceilings are worth the full ninety minutes rather than a quick walk-through.

An hour after the palace, the road crosses into Kerala at the Kaliyikkavila checkpost, where taxi permits are inspected. Our cars carry the Kerala state permit as standard, so the stop is two minutes rather than the delay an unlicensed car risks. Lunch is usually at Neyyattinkara, a working town rather than a tourist stop, and honestly a better plate of food than most places nearer the beach. Kovalam is another forty minutes past that, and you arrive with the whole evening still ahead of you.

Kovalam and Poovar: what a couple should actually do there

Kovalam is a beach town and a fairly busy one, so the honeymoon value is really in what you do around it. Lighthouse Beach at dusk, when the tour groups have mostly gone in for dinner, is the quiet version of it; the rocks at the northern end are a better spot to sit than the open sand in front of the restaurants. Samudra Beach, a walk north, is calmer again and where we suggest an early breakfast rather than the hotel buffet.

Poovar is the part of this trip couples talk about afterwards. A country boat leaves the jetty in the village, threads through mangrove canals that are genuinely quiet before nine, and comes out at a sandbar where the estuary meets the open sea on the other side of a narrow strip of sand. Go early, before the resort boats churn the water and before the light goes flat. From November to March the estuary mouth is calm enough to walk right across the bar; in the monsoon months the boats stop short of it, so we check the sea state on the morning rather than promise it in advance.

Rooms, privacy and the small things that make this different

What actually makes a car package feel like a honeymoon rather than a family tour is small and practical. The same car and the same driver for all four days, so nobody new is learning your plans each morning. No fixed group timings, so if you want an extra half hour at the palace or a slower breakfast, the day simply moves with you. We do not add stops you have not asked for, and we will say plainly when a spot is not worth the detour rather than padding the itinerary to look generous.

On accommodation, we suggest but do not book hotels, because couples have opinions about this that a travel operator should not override. What we will say: pay for the sea-facing room in Kovalam, it is worth it there in a way it is not always worth it in Kanyakumari; and book Kanyakumari on the temple side of town so the walk to Sunrise Point at 5:40 am is five minutes, not a drive. If you would rather add Alleppey and a houseboat night, our Kerala and Kanyakumari package extends this same route by a day.

Best time and who it suits

When: November to March, when the ferry runs daily and the Poovar estuary is calm enough for the boat to reach the sandbar.

Who: Suits couples with four days who want privacy over a packed itinerary; it does not suit anyone wanting the Alleppey houseboat too, who should add a day. See our month-by-month guide before you fix dates.

Questions about the Honeymoon Package

Yes, and it is the better order for a honeymoon. Arrive in the afternoon, watch the sunset with no ticket needed, sleep, then be on the sunrise deck by 5:45 am before the crowd doubles. Both events happen within about fourteen hours of each other, and a hotel on the temple side of town puts you a five-minute walk from the point.
About 260 km over four days, from Kanyakumari across the Kaliyikkavila border to Kovalam and back to Trivandrum airport, with Padmanabhapuram Palace and the Poovar backwater in between. It is a relaxed pace by design, rarely more than two and a half hours of driving on any single day, so the trip does not feel like a transfer with sightseeing bolted on.
Go from November to March, when the Kanyakumari ferry runs daily, the Poovar estuary is calm enough to reach the sandbar, and Kovalam is dry. April and May are hot with school-holiday crowds; June to September brings the monsoon, and while it is green and cheap, the Poovar boats sometimes stop short of the sandbar in rough sea.
No, and that is deliberate. The sedan is yours for all four days with the same driver throughout, so there is no fixed group schedule to work around. If you want an extra hour at the palace or a slower start after a late breakfast, the itinerary simply absorbs it rather than falling behind a bus timetable.
Yes. Fly into Trivandrum, spend the first two days on the Kerala side at Kovalam and Poovar, then drive down to Kanyakumari for the sunset and sunrise, and fly out from Trivandrum again. Tell us the flight times when booking and we will flip the route without changing the price, since the running distance stays about the same either way.
