Kanyakumari has a small number of genuinely sea-facing rooms and one enormous week of demand. The last week of December through the first two days of January fills first, and it fills roughly ten weeks out. By the middle of October the sea-view stock at the better properties is effectively gone, and what remains repricing upward by half.
The timeline
August and September: everything is available and rates are ordinary. This is when the people who come every year book. Mid-October: sea-facing rooms for 28 December to 2 January disappear. Late November: town rooms and the Nagercoil options tighten. Third week of December: we start taking calls from people who assumed it would be fine.
Three things that still work late
First, stay in Nagercoil, twenty kilometres inland, where the stock is larger, the rates are half, and a 4:45 am departure still gets you to the sunrise deck before the crowd. We run that pickup most mornings in season. Second, shift your dates by four days. The 3rd to the 6th of January is a different market entirely. Third, take a town room without a sea view and spend the difference on an extra day, because you will be outdoors at sunrise and sunset anyway and asleep in between.
What we will tell you honestly
If you call us on 20 December wanting a sea-facing room for the 30th, we will say it is not happening and offer the alternatives above rather than book you something disappointing at a high rate.
